Transportation

lf a parent can drive the child to school, the bus will provide transportation after school, as usual. If the parent cannot drive the child to school, please call the Transportation Department at (217) 586-4443 to see if we can possibly assist you further.

The district, as required by Illinois School Code, provides transportation to students who meet the following criteria:

• Reside 1.5 miles or further from their school of residence, or
• A hazardous crossing (as deemed by a traffic study) exists on the route to school, or
• The student’s IEP requires specialized transportation, or
• The student meets the designation of homeless (Section 45/1-15 Education for Homeless Children Act). 
   

School bus routes and stops are determined by Mahomet-Seymour’s Transportation Department on the basis of safety, efficiency and student ridership. Bus routes, stops or times may be altered by the Transportation Department if ridership changes during the school year. Scheduled bus route stop times are set as a general guide.

Your student should arrive at the stop at least five minutes before the regular arrival time of the bus. If there is a substitute driver, the times may not be absolutely consistent with the regular times. If the bus is late your student should remain at the stop. Buses can break down, roads can be blocked, a driver may be ill or have emergencies, etc. which may result in a late bus. If the wait becomes extreme (approximately 15 minutes), please call the Transportation Office at 217-586-4443.

Bus drivers will not release kindergarten or younger students without a parent/guardian meeting the bus, unless the school has a letter from the parent/guardian authorizing the driver to release students to another adult.

lf a kindergarten or younger student is not met at the bus stop by the parent/guardian or authorized adult, Transportation will try to contact the house before leaving the bus stop. It is important that the school office has your current phone numbers. If there is no response, Transportation will then bring the student back to school for pickup.

Students are expected to ride to and from school on their assigned buses. Parents or guardians must notify the school if their student needs to ride home with another student, or needs to be dropped off at a different location, based on the number of students on bus requested.

Bus drivers will collect all items left on the bus daily. Items such as hats, gloves, water bottles ETC will be left on the bus for your student to claim the next time they ride the bus. Every Friday, the bus drivers will place any unclaimed items into the transportation office lost and found.

Bus drivers will bring backpacks, lunch boxes, electronic devices in to the transportation office daily to be claimed.

Please put your students name on any items that you can. This will help us get these items returned to your student.

Bus stops are centrally located for students eligible to ride the bus. We try to keep the bus stops centrally located in these areas from year to year. Ridership is always changing.

If you are moving within the district, notify the current school of your move as soon as possible. The new school will notify the Transportation Department of the change for your child. If you are moving out of the district, please contact the Transportation Department directly.

Please call the Transportation office at 217-586-4443. When calling the Transportation department, please include the following information:

• Bus Number.
• When and where the incident occurred. Please include both a date and time.
• A description of the event being reported.
