A New Junior High. Zero Rate Change.

$84 Million // Grades 6-8 // Opens Fall 2029 // Vote November 3

On November 3, Mahomet-Seymour voters decide whether the District can build a new Junior High for $84 million to address overcrowding in the current aging Junior High. With debt retiring, the District tax rate would not increase.

What is being requested?
Permission to borrow $84 million to build a new Junior High School.

Why is this needed?
The Junior High opened in 1961 for 615 students. It holds over 800 today.

What would it build?
A new Junior High for 900-1100 students, grades 6-8 on land the district already owns on the south side of South Mahomet Road, opening fall 2029.

Does this raise the District tax rate?
No. Old debt is coming off the books as new debt would go on, with funds from countywide sales tax and local economic growth in the budget as well. The District rate stays where it is.

Why is it on a ballot if the rate does not change?
State law requires voter approval before a school district can borrow money to build a school. That is true even when the District tax rate stays the same.

What happens if it does not pass?
The Junior High will evaluate renovation and additions to address overcrowding and aging building systems. In the meantime, the District keeps managing overcrowding with split classrooms, converted storage, and portables.
