Mahomet-Seymour CUSD #3 is a growing community, and our schools are an important part of what makes it special. All four of our schools earned the highest "Exemplary" designation on the 2025 Illinois Report Card. Our teachers are among the top rated in the nation.
As our community grows, our schools continue to play an important role in making Mahomet-Seymour a desirable place to call home. Enrollment is up more than 480 students since 2010.
The current Junior High
As the number of students in our district grows, so does the need for educational spaces. Right now, the Junior High is well over capacity with nearly 200 more students than it was designed for.
The Junior High opened in 1961 for 615 students. There are 811 students in it today.
Classrooms have been split in half. Teachers work out of converted storage rooms. Students walk outside in all weather to reach portable classrooms, including every trip to the restroom, and that walk comes out of their class time. The roof and heating systems need constant repair.
This referendum does:
- Allow the District to borrow $84 million to build a new Junior High
- Keep the District tax rate where it has been for 30 years
- Return space at Middletown Prairie Elementary to student use
This referendum does not:
- Raise the District tax rate
- Freeze your tax bill, which also depends on your property's assessed value, set by the county assessor
- Allow the money to be spent on anything but building the school and improving the site
What the referendum builds
A new Junior High for grades 6 through 8, on 38 acres the district already owns.
- Built for 900 to 1,100 students, about 300 more than today
- Classrooms sized for the number of students in them
- A library and media commons
- Dedicated space for band, choir, art, and STEM
- Gym space and locker rooms
- Kitchen, cafeteria, restrooms, and storage
- Secure entrances, with buses and parents arriving separately
- Room to add on as the District grows
- Planned to open fall 2029
What happens to the current Junior High
The building will stay in use. District administration and technology offices would move in. Additional spaces in the current building can be evaluated for future use.
Community Feedback
This summer, 2,245 residents took a survey. It went out before any decision was made and before any ballot language was written.
More than 80% favored a new Junior High with zero rate change. Support stayed above 73% in every group: parents and people with no children at home, every age, people new here and people here 20 years or more.
The Board of Education put that plan, shaped by community feedback, on the ballot.
Important dates
September 24. Early voting and vote by mail begin.
October 7 and October 21. Junior High walk-throughs. Come see it.
November 3. Election day.
Registered voters who live inside District boundaries are eligible.

Shall the Board of Education of Mahomet-Seymour Community Unit School District Number 3, Champaign and Piatt Counties, Illinois, build and equip a new Junior High School Building, improve the site thereof, and issue bonds of said School District to the amount of $84,000,000 for the purpose of paying the costs thereof?
