An investigation over the past 48 hours of an incident between a Mahomet-Seymour bus and private vehicle has yielded the following facts: • On Monday, March 26th at approximately 8:00 a.m. a Mahomet-Seymour School bus, making a right turn to proceed west on State Street, clipped a vehicle (car) making a left turn from the same location. • At the time of the contact with the other vehicle, the driver was unaware that contact had been made with the vehicle. This is supported by video evidence from inside the bus. The driver proceeded to Mahomet-Seymour High School to drop off students. The driver then proceeded to Mahomet-Seymour Jr. High School to drop off students. At this time, several students exiting the bus indicated to the driver she had scraped a vehicle. • Her reaction to this information was one of surprise, as she was not aware of any contact with another vehicle. She then immediately contacted the Director of Transportation. After communicating with him, she proceeded on to drop off the remaining students on the bus at school. • This information is supported through the evidence supplied by the video camera system on the bus. Various accounts of this incident posted on social media are not accurate. The district has taken the time to thoroughly investigate the incident, utilizing the video evidence, which also contains the audio recording, and following up with the driver and Mahomet Police Department. The Mahomet Police Department investigated the incident after being contacted by the driver of the private vehicle, and determined it was not a “hit and run.” Neither driver was ticketed. An exchange of information took place, and an accident report was written. Chief Mike Metzler characterized the incident as “a non-event.” The school district continually monitors any incident that occurs in/around our school day, as well as our follow up protocols. We will continue to examine and monitor that. We understand that some parents are concerned that they were not immediately notified about this incident and others are concerned they first found out about this via local media. At the time, in assessing the event, evidence suggested it was extremely minor. There were no student injuries and there was no disruption to the school day for any students involved. There was nothing reported to the local media by the school district or the police. However, we live in a day where events get picked up, amplified, and often misrepresented on social media. This causes alarm and concern. Some parents would have preferred that we had would have released an update Monday shortly after the event took place. We understand that and will take those concerns into account moving forward. Further questions about the incident can be directed to Chief Mike Metzler at the Mahomet Police Department.

A message for parents/guardians from our school nurse, Nita Bachman: The peak of the cold and flu season is upon us. To prevent widespread flu in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines: Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms: • Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep) • Headache • Mild stomach ache Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms: • Fever (greater than 100 degrees by mouth and your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours) • Vomiting (even once) • Diarrhea • Chills • General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches • Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose To help prevent the flu and other colds, teach your children good hygiene habits: • Wash hands frequently • Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until "fever free" for a minimum of 24 hours. A child who has started antibiotics needs to be on the medication for 48 hours before considered non-contagious and able to return to school. Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on return to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. Thank you in advance for helping make this year at school as healthy as possible. Sincerely, Nita Bachman R.N. School Nurse

Good afternoon Mahomet-Seymour Parents/Guardians, Early this afternoon some staff members at Mahomet-Seymour High School made our administration aware of a threatening message on social media. Mahomet Police were immediately involved in the situation. Upon further investigation of the situation by the MPD and MSHS administration, the threat at this time has been determined to not be credible. We appreciate our staff members taking the actions that they did. Again, while the threat has been determined to not be credible, out of an abundance of caution there will be an increased police presence at MSHS tomorrow. Ellen Ericson, Spanish instructor at Mahomet-Seymour High School, has been recognized for receiving the 2017 ICTFL Distinguished Educator Award from the Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ICTFL). The Distinguished Educator Award recognizes educators whose exemplary teaching has provided inspiration to large numbers of foreign language students and/or teachers. This category includes persons who have distinguished themselves in teacher education and as in-service trainers, as well as in the actual teaching of languages and cultures. In addition to her duties teaching Spanish at Mahomet-Seymour High School, Ellen has devoted countless hours over the years mentoring other teachers and pursuing ongoing training to enhance her own professional expertise. Ellen was one of the first cadre of Illinois teachers to be trained in the TALL-IL program in 2013. In 2014 Ellen completed ACTFL’s Oral Proficiency Interview training. She has presented workshops to teachers on Backward Design, Creating Units, and Proficiency Based Learning. In 2015, Ellen represented ICTFL in the Conference Workshop/Extension Workshop on the topic of “Integrated Proficiency Based Assessment: Moving from Performance to Proficiency” at the Central States Conference. She and the other Illinois teachers from the CW/EW presented the ICTFL teacher training workshop “WinterFest” in 2016. Her colleagues at ICTFL recognize Ellen as a learner, a team-player and an active member of our teaching profession. “I couldn’t be more proud of the award that Mrs. Ellen Ericson has been granted from the Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Mrs. Ericson not only works hard to improve the learning experiences for her students, but she also gives of herself to mentor others in the profession,” Shannon Cheek, principal of Mahomet-Seymour High School said. “I appreciate all the time and energy Mrs. Ericson has dedicated to the students and her colleagues at Mahomet-Seymour High School, and the time and energy she continues to dedicate to the continued development and improvement of the teaching profession. Her professionalism, hard work and dedication is admired.”

At approximately 11 a.m. this morning Champaign police took a suspect into custody on Mahomet-Seymour High School property after a chase. Further details are unavailable at this time, as law enforcement is handling this investigation. The message below is from the Champaign Urbana Public Health District. November 28, 2017 Dear Parent: We have identified two confirmed cases of WHOOPING COUGH (also known as PERTUSSIS) in the Mahomet-Seymour schools. One case at Lincoln Trail in the third grade class, and the other in 7th grade at the Jr. High. Pertussis is a contagious, bacterial illness that is spread from person-to-person by droplet or direct contact with airborne respiratory secretions or by indirect contact with articles soiled by the infected person’s nose and throat discharges. Symptoms of Pertussis usually appear 5-to 10-days after exposure, but can take as long as 21 days. The first symptoms are similar to those of a common cold - a runny nose, sneezing, low- grade fever and a mild, occasional cough. The cough gradually becomes severe and, after one to two weeks, the patient has spasmodic bursts of numerous, rapid coughs. The characteristic high- pitched "whoop," which is more common in children, and comes from breathing in after a coughing episode. During such an attack, the patient may turn blue, vomit and become exhausted. Between coughing attacks, the patient usually appears normal. If you or someone you know has an unexplained cough lasting greater than two weeks accompanied by one of the symptoms listed above please refer them to a physician. Please adhere to the following recommendations from the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District regarding suspect/ confirmed cases of Pertussis: 1. Cases of Pertussis must be excluded from school, daycare, or other social gatherings until at least 5 days after starting on antibiotic therapy. 2. Please consult with your physician if someone in your home is experiencing any Pertussis- like symptoms. Your doctor can diagnose the disease in a few days by ordering a PCR test. If the test is positive all household members and high-risk individuals need to receive 5 days of antibiotic therapy. 3. Every child should of have received the pertussis vaccine at 2, 4, 6 and 15 months of age and another dose at 4 to 6 years of age. This vaccine is given in the same shot with diphtheria and tetanus vaccines. Immunization is required for child care and school attendance. A single dose of Tdap is recommended for people 11 through 64 for continued protection against pertussis. If you have questions or concerns, I can be reached at (217) 531-5361 or by email at rthompson@c-uphd.org. Respectfully, Rachella Thompson-Brown Communicable Disease Investigator
